The United Nations Security Council may be trying to overrule President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The resolution to this effect was drafted in Egypt. It “affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council,”
This resolution draft has already been around all 15 members of the Security Council. So the idea is set in motion.
They are choosing to do this just after President Trump had declared that the United States would officially recognize that Jerusalem is the official capital city of Israel. No United States administration has ever done this, despite promises to do so made by previous Presidents.
The President’s decision involves moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Tel Aviv is the city that most nations officially recognize as the capital city of Israel.
Palestine has also claimed Jerusalem as their own, and President Trump’s decision has ruffled some feathers with not only the Palestinians, who have rioted since the declaration, but also with other Muslim countries like Turkey.
The Trump administration is not backing down. They stand by the claim, saying that the announcement is long overdue.
“This is just a reality check,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on CNN last week regarding the decision. “This is nothing that anybody didn’t already know.”
The United Nations is taking the side of the Palestinians, starting on the resolution draft that has already circulated.
However, nothing is set in stone yet. As the United States will veto this idea in front of the Security Council.
This could also be easily reversed by the United Nations if a Democrat is elected in the future. They could do this in a more closed session and keeping it on the down low instead of risking the backlash that they could get by doing this completely openly. Obama let the United Nations Security Council make his decision for him. The new Democrats would probably do that too.
With the current state of everything, it can be seen as a concern to Israel and their allies. The U.N. is trying to undermine America in general. If this continues, then we are under the U.N.’s thumb. They are supposed to keep the peace, not have complete control.
