I’ve heard of this kind of thing happening with gas pumps due to the fact that people really do not look over a gas pump all that closely. However, one of the things that we all have to use at one point or another is a shopping cart. That being said, be careful the next time you go shopping.
If you shop at Walmart, you might want to examine the handle of the cart you use and check for a “booby trap” that could send you to the hospital. Police in Festus, Missouri, said razor blades have been discovered hidden in the handles of shopping carts at a Walmart store, reported KTVI.
There have been two reports of blades during the week. One report occurred Sunday when a woman identified as Michelle Patterson felt a prick on her finger when she used a sanitary wipe to clean the handle of her cart.
She told KTVI the blade made her finger bleed but her main concern was children who might have been placed in the cart.
“The lady behind me had a toddler, that would have been her cart if I hadn’t been there first” Patterson said. “That’s what upsets me.”
KTVI reported that Walmart released a statement declaring the company would work with authorities to catch whoever is responsible for the blades.
“It’s disturbing that someone might try to injure a customer or associate, and we’re grateful no one was seriously hurt. We’ve checked all shopping carts and are currently conducting regular checks. We’ve also reviewed surveillance footage and will continue working with police to find the person responsible,” the statement said.
Police did say that they did not suspect the razor blades were put on the handles to harm, anyone but rather that they’d probably been placed there by a shoplifter who used them to remove tags or open packages.
“I have heard of situations before where a shoplifter will use a blade to slice open packaging,” Festus Police Capt. Doug Wendel told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
KTVI reported that investigators are reviewing surveillance video to help them gain insight into what happened.
The store said it would check carts for more blades.

It’s troubling to think that someone would put razor blades on shopping cart handles for any reason at all.
